Indoor Soil Mix

Budding/1 min read

A well-draining, nutrient-rich soil mix is essential for indoor plant health. Unlike outdoor gardens, indoor plants can't rely on natural soil ecosystems—you need to create the right environment.

The Base Recipe

Standard Mix (3:1:1 ratio)

  • 3 parts quality potting soil
  • 1 part perlite (for drainage)
  • 1 part orchid bark or coco coir (for aeration)

For Tropical Plants Add extra organic matter and retain more moisture. Reduce perlite slightly.

For Succulents & Cacti Increase perlite to 2 parts, add coarse sand. These need excellent drainage.

Key Principles

  • Drainage is non-negotiable: Soggy roots = dead plants
  • Refresh annually: Soil compacts and loses nutrients over time
  • Match to plant needs: Aroids want chunky, succulents want gritty

Signs Your Mix Needs Work

  • Water pools on surface → needs more perlite
  • Dries too fast → needs more organic matter
  • Root rot appearing → drainage issue
